Student Testimonials:
"Josh Needleman has been my teacher on the electric bass for the past seven years and the double bass for the past three years. His expansive range of knowledge covering rock and funk to the more disciplinary genres of music, such as classical and jazz, has given me a solid and well-rounded foundation as a musician. I have not only immensely grown in technical ability, but I have also gained the necessary confidence for any future endeavors. I would like to thank Josh for the inspiration, my abilities on the two instruments, and the moral support and I look forward to continuing the lessons." ~Daniel Durst, July 2010

"Hi Josh,
In January I was selected as the bassist for the California All-State jazz band which met one weekend in Fresno in February. Also, I was accepted into UCLA's music program with a scholarship after auditioning for Kenny Burrell himself! I also auditioned at University of Michigan and was accepted. Just filling you in on what has been happening lately and saying thank you again for the years of invaluable lessons."
~Owen Clapp

"I just recently ended my four years of weekly bass lessons from Josh. He is everything I could have hoped for in areas such as extensive theory knowledge, killer playing abilities, player development, and encouraging moral support. I don't want to think about where I would be as a player if it wasn't for Josh. After only four years, I now teach bass lessons of my own and play in an increasingly successful alternative progressive rock band called Overview. Thank you." ~Greg

"Josh taught my daughter Lily for almost two years. I am very picky about music teachers, since I am a musician myself. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher for my kid! Not only did he teach her technical skills, reading, and theory basics, but he got her playing songs she liked, in time and in tune, almost immediately. I like the fact that he has an overview of where the student is going and which steps to take to get there. Lily knows where all the notes are, understands chords, and can play lines easily from fingering exercises. Thanks Josh, you rock!" ~Bonnie Hayes

"Today is a very exciting day with very exciting news I felt I absolutely must share with you: I got accepted to Berklee College of Music!!! I just wanted to say, sincerely and truly, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Having you as a teacher gave me all the hope, drive, and solid foundation that got me where I am today, and I would be nowhere near where I am had it not been for your great leadership, inspiration, and friendship." ~Marty

Since January 1997, Josh Needleman has tutored students of all levels on Bass Guitar and Upright Bass at Bananas At Large. Known for his patience and thorough knowledge of the bass and music theory, Josh is able to inspire his students to excel. With a program customized to each students level and ability, Josh takes his students through a program of learning their favorite songs, reading notes and chord symbols, playing by ear, and developing proficiency in styles such as rock, jazz, funk, reggae, hip hop, blues, pop, latin, ska, classical, old time, and bluegrass.

Recently, Josh has begun taking on students of all instruments wishing to learn music theory as it applies to jamming with other musicians.

Josh was raised in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York where he studied piano and singing at age four. His first concert was with the All State Children's Chorus at the capitol in Albany. After dabbling with trumpet, cello, guitar, and trombone, by age 14 Josh was busy singing and playing bass in his high school rock band "Axis" as well as holding down the bass chair in the school jazz band. "Bass was an instrument with a lot of room to grow on. It seemed like everyone was playing guitar and I filled the need." Josh attended Boston College where he received a BA while doubling as jazz bassist for BC Bop! and house bassist for The Contemporary Theater Society of Boston College. After college, Josh played bass and sang in a full time touring party band out of Boston called "Out Of The Blue" for two years before relocating to the SF Bay Area. As a performer, Josh has recorded or appeared on stage with many well known Bay Area artists and organizations including Terry Garthwaite, Symphony Parnasus, Willow Ray, Surreal, David Grisman, Lucas Arts, Collage of i, Nina Gerber, Joe Craven, Don Cherry, Scribe, Jenny & Maria Muldaur, and Joan Baez. Josh can be reached at (415) 519-7048 and for lessons.
