The NAMM Foundation recently announced that Women's Audio Mission was one of 25 recipients nationwide of the organization's 2010-2011 grants program. The NAMM Foundation allocated $585,000 in funding to support innovative community-based music learning programs that allow more people the opportunity to experience the proven benefits of active music making.

The new grants, while only a small portion of NAMM's overall annual multimillion-dollar-reinvestment into the music products industry, help worthy organizations operate programs designed to increase interest and participation in making music among seniors, college students and school-aged children. Since 1994, the NAMM Foundation has supported worthy music-making programs and has since then allocated more than $12.5 million to ensure their continuity.

Women's Audio Mission was awarded a grant for its Girls On The Mic program, which cultivates the next generation of female recording artists and engineers by providing San Francisco Bay Area girls, ages 8-18, with female mentors and musical instruments and technology to facilitate music recording projects that mirror professional activities.

"NAMM Foundation support is instrumental as we expand our educational outreach," said Women's Audio Mission Executive Director Terri Winston. "Thanks to this generous grant, hundreds of girls--most of whom have never had an opportunity to play a musical instrument--will learn leadership skills and boost their self-esteem, while discovering paths to "non-traditional" music careers and finding their voice through musical expression."
