The Distortion3 combines three nearly identical circuits with very different tonal palettes. With an added filter control to tame the high end fizziness of high-gain settings, and dual 3-way clipping switches, this pedal goes from a smooth & mild overdrive to full-on distortion box with ease.
Features:
Drive: Controls the amount of gain in the circuit. Counterclockwise = less distortion, clockwise = more distortion. Level: Controls the overall output of the Distortion3. Filter: The original circuits did not have any type of tone control. However, at the higher gain settings, the distortion can get somewhat harsh. I added a FILTER control to tame the fizziness of high-gain settings. Setting this control fully clockwise sets the circuit to the stock frequency response of the original circuits. Mode: This 3-way clipping switch toggles the different clipping setups of the original circuits. G = Germanium (Dist+), L = Diode Lift (MicroAmp), and S = Silicon (DOD 250). There is an internal DIP switch to convert the L mode to 5mm LEDs, for a more natural overdrive crunch. OD: This 3-way clipping switch is in the overdrive position of the circuit, for smooth overdrive tones. A = Asymmetrical, M = Mosfet, center = clean. Both clipping switches are independent & located in separate parts of the signal path, so they can be used separately or independently. Lo-Hi: This unique control switches between a lo-fidelity 741 op amp and an audiophile-grade OPA134PA op amp. The difference between the two op amps is somewhat subtle, but the OPA134PA is clearer and smoother sounding at higher frequencies. Internal Controls: There is one internal DIP switch in the Distortion3. This 2-position DIP switch can select between diode lift & 5mm red LEDs for the “L” mode. A diode lift provides more headroom & clean boost, but 5mm red LEDs have a more natural, crunch-style distortion when you crank the DRIVE control.
The second position of the DIP switch increases the bass response of high-DRIVE settings.
