The extraordinarily accurate Earthworks M550 offers flat, extended frequency response, superb impulse response, very high sensitivity and lower self noise than was thought possible with so small a diaphragm. It is useful for a surprizing range of applications- from laboratory tests, field data collection, production measurements and even collecting the subsonic conversations of elephants. The M550 provides a true and accurate representation of sonic events as they happen in the air. The M550 is precise and dependable. Across the 20Hz to 20kHz “audio band” its frequency response is effectively flat, typically within ±0.5dB approaching the tolerence what is poossible to test. The ±1dB window extends from below 10Hz to beyond 40kHz. Earthworks states that its impulse response is faster and cleaner than anything they have measured. This impulse performance means that the M550 is able to transduce wave forms precisely. Its temperature co-efficient is effectively zero. Its sensitivity does not change with respect to temperature. It has no handling noise. It handles huge signals cleanly and is quiet enough to measure noise leakage. It can be used to listen to bats and elephants simultaneously if you can get the animals to co-operate. The M550 is affordable. Doesn’t have a dedicated power suppy. The Earthworks ZDT preamp is an excellent, equally high-quality match for the M550. Frequency Chart ![]() Impulse Chart ![]() Specifications
